VW recalls Jettas for wiring problem

Mon, 28 Mar 2011

Volkswagen of America Inc. on Monday voluntarily recalled 71,043 2011 Jettas because of wiring problems with the anti-theft alarm system and horn.

"The current electrical wiring layout has the horn wiring protected by the same fuse as the converter box wiring," said VW spokeswoman Sheriece Matias. "So if there was an electrical short in the horn it could cause the converter box to be disconnected from the power supply."

She said the anti-theft alarm system is wired to the same fuse.

"It would have to be a bunch of rare instances for this to happen, but if it did, it could cause the car to stall," she said.

The recall affects sedans built between March 2010 and March 2011, the company said in a release on its Web site. No injuries or accidents have been reported, VW said.

Affected owners will be notified by mail in the coming weeks, Matias said. She said dealers will separate the wiring at no charge in a process that takes about an hour.
