Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet arrives on video
Thu, 20 Dec 2012The first view of a production VW Golf R Cabriolet has arrived in a video of the new Golf R Cabriolet from Volkswagen.
The idea that VW would produce a convertible version of the Golf R has been around as long as the Golf R has. But only now, when the current Golf R is almost the ‘old’ Golf R after the arrival of the new VW Golf MK 7, do we get the production version.
We’ve had the concept Golf R Cabriolet at Worthersee in 2011 – and we even got patent office drawings from China of the Golf R Cab – bit this video that’s appeared from VW is the first proof that the Golf R Cab really is ready to go on sale.
Looking almost exactly the same as the R Cab Concept from Worthersee, the production Golf R Cabriolet gets the tin-top R’s butch body kit, bigger alloys and plenty of ‘R’ badges, inside and out.
Under the bonnet, as far as we know, is the same 2.0 litre turbo petrol delivering 270 PS to all four wheels with a probable sub-6 second 0-62mph on offer.
With this video appearing now, it seems likely VW are planning to take the Golf R Cabriolet to the Detroit Auto Show next month, and get it in to showrooms for the spring 2013. And when it does arrive at Detroit we should have more detail and prices.
