Volkswagen Scirocco Million celebrates a million Sciroccos – but not for the UK
Fri, 03 May 2013A million sales of a particular model of a car is something to celebrate, so Volkswagen is building a special edition Scirocco – the Scirocco Million ()catchy little name) – to celebrate the event. But it’s not exactly a world wide celebration.
In fact, VW is only offering the Scirocco Million in Germany and China, which perhaps tells you more about where the Scirocco still ramps up sales than anything else.
When the Scirocco launched in the 1970s it was an interesting and appealing car, offering more style and panache than its hatchback sibling – the VW Golf – and VW went to the effort of marketing it quite hard and producing a real range-topper in the Scirocco Storm.
That original mark 1 Scirocco sold over 500,000 units in its eight year life and even the less convincing Mk 2 managed almost 300,000 units in its ten year life, which ended in 1992.
But the latest Mk 3 Scirocco, which launched in 2008, has never really floated buyers’ boats (except, we guess, from where the Million is being sold) and, despite a much bigger car market than there was 20 years ago, has sold just 200,000 this time around. Does that mean VW will replace it with a mark 4 version based on the Golf Mk 7? Probably not.
So, appealing through the Scirocco still is – especially the Scirocco R – we do wonder if this Scirocco Million is a farewell model? If it is, VW aren’t exactly going out with a bang as the Scirocco Million is just a bit of a cosmetic tweak with a few R-Line bits, leather with orange stitching and numerous ‘Million’ logos.
It’s a shame, as VW could have done so much more with the Scirocco. What about the Scirocco R getting the Golf R’s 4WD platform. What about a convertible Scirocco? What about some high-profile marketing?
Oh, well.
