Volkswagen Taigun concept
Tue, 23 Oct 2012Volkswagen has unveiled its new Taigun concept car at the Sao Paolo motor show, previewing a future B-segment SUV.
The Taigun continues VW's new SUV aesthetic, first shown on last year's Cross Coupe concept, with a similar, full-width grille and lamp and very strong horizontal feature lines. Unlike the crossover Cross Coupe however, the Taigun follows a more traditional, upright SUV format. There's also a hint of Up! in its DNA, especially in its DLO, which is appropriate as it is based on a lengthened Up! platform giving the Taigun dimensions of 3,860mm in length and a width of 1,730mm, sitting on a wheelbase of 2,470mm with short overhangs of 708mm front and 681 mm at the rear.
Its most striking feature are the almost brutal wheel arches that bookend the car in side view and add robustness beyond its size. The rear features a Range Rover-style split tailgate which aims to make loading easier, with the top two-thirds opening up and the bottom folding down.
Inside, the Up! connection is stronger, with a similar IP architecture and the same use of painted plastics. its controls have been cut back to a minimum through details such as the HVAC controls placed directly in the air nozzles.
Volkswagen has said that it will be keeping an eye on public reaction before deciding whether the Taigun will make it to production.
