Volkswagen brings entire Polo lineup to Geneva
Tue, 25 Feb 2014
Volkswagen revealed the new Polo lineup on Wednesday ahead of the cars' official appearance at the
Geneva motor show. The Polo family now includes the Polo TSI BlueMotion, TDI BlueMotion, BlueGT and CrossPolo. VW will also tout its R-Line exterior and interior packages for the subcompacts.
The Polo BlueMotion cars get either a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder gas engine or a three-cylinder diesel. The gasoline-fed engine produces 89 hp, while the diesel makes 74 hp. VW claims the TSI uses 4.1 liters/100 km, which converts to about 60 mpg, while the diesel gets an astounding 75 mpg when converted.
The Polo BlueGT is the uprated model. It makes 148 hp from a 1.4-liter, four-cylinder engine. Max torque is pegged at 184 lb-ft. A six-speed manual is standard; a seven-speed dual-clutch is optional. The BlueGT uses 4.8 liters/100 km, which works out to about 49 mpg. The BlueGT can also deactivate two of its four cylinders, using even less fuel under certain driving situations.
Finally, the CrossPolo is for people who “appreciate an individual off-road appearance while maintaining consistent on-road qualities,” according to VW. It gets new colors and seat materials, a new type of wheel and smoked rear lights. It also features an underbody protection panel that protects important bits from intrusion by rocks, sticks or stumps.
The R-Line packages from VW upgrade the look of the Polos. Equipment includes new bumpers, sport seats, new steering wheels, a high-gloss radiator and different wheels.
We don't expect the Polo lineup to come stateside, but if that changes, we'll be the first to let you know. Come back next week for more Geneva motor show news.
