Volkswagen e-Up makes some noise

Mon, 23 Dec 2013

NOW HERE’S a left-field solution to the problem of silent electric cars going unnoticed by pedestrians in town.

Volkswagen has taken its new e-Up electric city car to Stockholm, fitted with hidden speakers, a microphone and a beatbox artist, Fatih Sahin, on the rear bench seat. And they filmed it.

The result is a city car that moves through the streets to whatever tune Sahin chooses, with imitation engine noises, cheeky hellos to roadside women and a ‘reversing beep’.

Near the end of the video two buskers with a flute and a guitar appear to join in with the e-Up and Sahin’s rhythms to create something with even more depth.

Entitled “The Streets Sound Different,” with the tagline ‘e-mobility by Volkswagen’, the video is a tongue-in-cheek look at a way to spice up an all-electric future urban scene.
