Volkwagen BlueSport Concept debuts with a diesel at the Detroit auto show
Sun, 11 Jan 2009Volkswagen's long-rumored mid-engine roadster finally made its debut at the Detroit Auto Show.
The Concept BlueSport slots its efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel four-cylinder midship in the compact chassis, demonstrating the sporty possibilities of the engine. With 177 hp and a healthy 258 lb-ft of torque, the diesel powerplant propels the 2,640-pound roadster to 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds.
Aiding fuel efficiency is a six-speed dual-clutch transmission helping to transmit power to the rear wheels. An automatic start-stop system and brake energy regeneration system that helps reduce the pull on the engine help bump efficiency up even more. The result, according to Volkswagen, is an estimated combined EPA rating of 42 mpg.
The exterior design carries on the new VW design language already seen on the Scirocco and new Golf, with dual-cross slats formed by a narrow radiator grille highlighting the front fascia. Xenon headlamps in front, while LEDs are used for the taillight treatment. From the side, the wheel wheels are filled with 19-inch wheels. Short overhangs further lend to the BlueSport's compact appearance.
Inside, a touch screen interface similar to the one first seen on the Up! concept cars to control entertainment functions. Covering the cabin is a lightweight soft top that can be stored or raised in seconds.
