Volvo teases new Concept ES ahead of 2014 Geneva Motor Show

Sat, 22 Feb 2014

Volvo has released these mysterious teaser shots of its new Concept ES show car ahead of the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

Although largely covered in a dustsheet - annoyingly - we can still see the first details of the new car, which has the silhouette of a long shooting brake.

It's also the first confirmation of the name of the car: Concept ES harks back to the 480 ES of the late 1980s, which gave Volvo a distinctive coupe with pop-up headlamps and an unusual rear end (see below).

The 2014-style Concept ES appears to be a bigger car, but the shooting brake bustle-back rear end and long bonnet remain. The Geneva show car rolls on large, two-tone 20in wheels, shod with chunky 255/35 R20 Pirelli P-Zero sporting tyres.

It's the third and final concept car of the Swedes' newly appointed senior vice president of design, Thomas Ingenlath. He promised a trio of styling exercises to showcase his vision for the future of Volvo cars: the Concept Coupe and the Concept XC Coupe.

What does this teaser shot tell us about the Volvo concept car at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show?

Frustratingly little. But Volvo promises more information next week, when the covers will be removed fully.

For now, we can see cleaner bodywork surfacing and what looks like a new rear light graphic. Is this the end of the C-shaped, wraparound rear lamps used by Volvo for so long? Perhaps.

These concept cars are certainly showing the look and feel of the new 2015 XC90 - the first landmark new car to showcase the fresh Volvo design and its Scalable Product Architecture, the four-cylinder powertrain and platform which will underpin all future larger Volvo models.

The Volvo Concept ES will be uncovered for real on 4 March 2014, where it will sit alongside the Volvo Concept Coupe and Concept XC Coupe at the Geneva Motor Show.
