Even with the latest lithium-ion batteries, the forthcoming 4.4-litre V8 petrol-electric version will struggle to match the astonishing 39.2mpg and 192g/km of CO2 of the new six-cylinder diesel, especially when BMW will launch stop-start technology for the whole range within two years. The hybrid is likely to cost several thousand more than the £65,000 it’s estimated you’ll need to buy the regular, twin-turbo 750i that goes on sale in November 2008.

The Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer arrives (Opel version pictured) to take on the Allroad It  always seem likely that Vauxhall and Opel would add some butch bits to the Insignia Sports Tourer at some point to create an ‘Allroad’ version. And here it is – the Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer. Actually, Vauxhall hasn’t managed to get their Box Brownies out yet so what we’ve got are photos of the Opel version of the Country Tourer, but bar the badges they’ll be the same.

The Renault Clio GT Line (pictured) is a bit of a sheep in Wolf’s clothing There’s one big problem when car makers build hot hatches with go-faster bits bolted on and decent amounts of power and performance, and that’s that the demographic hot hatches appeal to are the ones least likely to be able to afford insurance premiums on a pocket rocket. Looking for all the world like a Clio that could take on the RenaultSport Clio 200, the Clio GT Line in fact has a 1.2 TCe petrol engine lurking under the bonnet, with a more modest 118bhp, 0-62mph of 9.9 seconds, 54.3mpg and emissions of 120g/km.
