This is an aftermarket replacement for worn out worm gears in the transfer case actuator motor assembly for some BMW AWD cars around 2006-2011. Note that BMWs SUVs do not usually use this part. The symptoms of a worn worm gear is a pulsing noise followed by the "4x4","ABS","brakes" and loss of traction alarms. This can either occur while driving or upon startup. The new worm gear is made of a mild steel so it won't cause excessive wear on the mating gear. The installation of this part should be done by an experienced mechanic or machinist. I DO NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS PART SINCE I AM NOT PERSONALLY PAIRING AND INSTALLING THE PART MYSELF I made this part because I was having this issue with my '07 328xi. I looked online for answers and found the plastic replacement gear for BMWs X-series SUVs. But I couldn't find any parts for the all metal design found in the AWD cars. So I figured I'd see what I could come up with. I put it in and haven't had a problem with it since. I thought maybe someone else might be able to benefit from this part as well, and avoid the costly replacement of the entire actuator motor. It would take an experienced person, with the right tools, about an hour to disassemble the motor, remove the old screw, install the new screw, clean out the old grease, regrease and reassemble. SUGGESTED INSTALLATION:After removing the actuator motor from the transfer case, remove the 2 torx screws that hold the motor to the housing. DO NOT REMOVE ALL 4 SCREWS!! Make sure the external gear is free to turn as you pull motor straight out of housing. Clean off worn screw gear with rag, then make a mark 1/2 inch from bearing face. Use bench vise to hold part still while cutting on the mark thru part with hacksaw. Once the end is cut off, you should be able to access the end of the motor shaft thru the now exposed hole. Using a 1/8inch thick file, carefully cut 2 grooves (about 1/16 inch deep and 180 degrees from each other) into the side of the piece that is remaining on the motor shaft. This will give you a place for a gear puller to grab so you can remove it from the motor by pressing out the end of motor shaft. DO NOT USE A HAMMER TO GET THEM APART!!! It may need a good amount of pressure to be removed so be careful. Also be sure not to let the motor get damaged when it lets go. Now it's time to press the new part on. The easiest way I found was to use a vise, applying a small amount of pressure until it starts to move, then releasing the pressure. Repeat this until it is seated against the bearing face. DO NOT APPLY EXCESSIVE PRESSURE!!! Before reinstalling, the internal gears should be repacked with a high quality grease. These installation instructions are only a suggestion and not a claim to responsibility for any problems. Jaguar: 0-75 years in under 4 minutes
Wed, 19 May 2010Jaguar are celebrating their 75th Anniversary in 2010 If Jaguar had reached the milestone of 75 years of car making even five years ago, playing the ‘History’ card would have been a dangerous game. The perception then was that Jaguar were living on former glories and their cars were stuck in the past. After all, the XJ looked to many as if it had changed little in almost forty years (although it was very comtemporary under the skin) and the S-Type looked even older.
