Mazda hires VW alum Derek Jenkins to head U.S. design staff

Former Volkswagen designer Derek Jenkins has been hired to be the design chief for Mazda in America. Jenkins, 39, fills a position vacated last summer by Franz von Holzhausen, who left to take the top design post at electric-vehicle maker Tesla Motors. Jenkins had been chief of design for the Volkswagen Group in North America, which he joined in 2000.

At the time VW debuted the XL1 we reckoned there was as much chance of it going in to production as McLaren’s latest Formula One car making it in to a showroom, and that the XL1 was just a test bed for all the future tech that might just find its way in to Volkswagen’s road cars.

1970 Chevelles fetch top dollar at Barrett-Jackson auction

The muscle-bound favorite of enthusiasts and boulevard cruisers everywhere, the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle, returned in force at the Barrett-Jackson Orange County Collector Car Auction, June 25-27. The top seller at the event was an SS 454 LS6 convertible, which sold for $253,000. That was closely followed by an SS custom coupe, which went for $250,000.
