But the latest Subaru Impreza is new for the UK as Subaru has decided the Yen has weakened enough since the Impreza’s launch to make it a viable option to import it. Even so, it is a bit of a Hobson’s choice for buyers with just the Impreza Hatch – not the saloon – on offer and only in a single trim level and with a single engine option – the 1.6 litre petrol Boxer engine.

But in the US, and Hyundai’s home market, the first generation of Hyundai’s large luxury saloon has been around for five years, offering a Korean take on luxury cars from Japan. But now, with the arrival of the second generation Hyundai Genesis, revealed in Korea yesterday ahead of a more public debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January, Hyundai look set to make the Genesis a world model, and the UK looks set to get it too.
Who's Where: Martin Smith to retire, succeeded by Joel Piaskowski as Ford Europe head of design
Wed, 28 May 2014Martin Smith, head of Ford of Europe design for the last 10 years, will retire at the end of this year, before which he will work on a project to study the future direction of the company's global design direction. He will be replaced by current head of strategic concepts group, Joel Piaskowski on 1 July. Smith (64) first joined Ford back in 2004, leaving General Motors as director of design for Opel/Vauxhall.
