She says the technology makes navigation easier than smartphones and GPS devices. Cecilia Abadie was pulled over for speeding and a California Highway Patrol officer noticed she was wearing Google Glass and added a ticket usually given to drivers who may be distracted by a video or TV screen.

The new Smart, due out in 2013, is planned to sit on a lightly modified version of the Renault Twingo’s underpinnings, complete with a 93.3-inch wheelbase. Not only do federal rules target a 2015 fleet average of 35.5 mpg, up from the current 27.5 mpg for cars and 23.1 mpg for light trucks; they force automakers to bet on different technology packages for each vehicle segment. Companies that do best at mixing technologies while keeping down costs will have an advantage when buyers wince at higher stickers.
