i-ELOOP

i-ELOOP performs three functions; 'regeneration,' 'storage' and 'use.' A big focus of the development was how to generate and store electricity as efficiently as possible because the opportunity to do this, the period when a car is braking or decelerating, is by nature very short. In order to develop a system which efficiently recaptures kinetic energy, generates electricity, quickly stores that electricity, Mazda has utilize variable voltage alternator and low-resistance, high-capacity electric double layer capacitor (EDLC).

Conventional alternator charges at around 12 volts (V), however i-ELOOP's variable voltage alternator can vary its output voltage from 12 V to 25V in response to the voltage level of the capacitor and making it possible to continually supply electricity to the capacitor.

Unlike a battery that works via chemical reaction, capacitors store energy as electricity and for this reason it can charge and discharge large amounts of electricity very quickly. It also exhibits very little deterioration of the electrodes even after prolonged use. Using capacitors as electricity storage devices in brake energy regeneration systems not only improves fuel economy, it is also expected to prolong the life span of the vehicles lead-acid battery. Furthermore, the capacitor used with i-ELOOP requires no heavy or precious metals, and its main component is activated charcoal making it very environmentally friendly.

Design an MG sports car for 2025, win a scholarship and internship at SAIC

Fri, 09 May 2014

SAIC has announced its second university student design competition. To be in with a shout, SAIC wants students to design a dream sports car or GT car for the MG brand to be launched in 2025. The brief asks for a concept that must not only must reference MG's history – 2014 is the firm's 90th anniversary – but that also reflects China's post-90s generation.

BMW i3 EV takes to the race track (video)

Sat, 14 Dec 2013

BMW i3 EV takes to the race track (video) The BMW i3 EV City Car finally got revealed in July in production guise, and it’s a clever car if not exactly a looker. With a lightweight inner body made from carbon fibre and an electric motor that offers 168 bhp and an instant 184lb/ft of torque it has more than enough power to keep up with traffic in any city. Sadly, the i3 hasn’t done particularly well in Euro NCAP tests but that hasn’t stopped orders for the i3 exceeding anything BMW could have reasonably expected.

Mercedes 'Aesthetics S' sculpture (2012) previews S-class

Tue, 04 Sep 2012

Mercedes is previewing its next 2013 S-class flagship, but not with a concept car or series of shadowy teaser shots. No, Merc has instead opted to create a sculpture showing the profile of the next S-class. It's titled 'Aesthetics S', and together with its 'exciting projection display', it'll be shown at the 2012 Paris motor show later this month.
