COMMON CAUSE OF THROTTLE BODY FAILURE

Most Mercedes throttle body failures occur with model years ’91-’96. The cause is commonly deterioration of the wiring harness. Over time the insulation becomes defective and allows the conductors to touch one another. This results in a poor running engine (if at all), high/low idle, poor acceleration and many other weird symptoms. Mercedes/VDO/Bosch removed the external harness on future models when it was identified as being the problem.

If you suspect that your throttle body is defective, take a small pen-knife and make a one inch slit in the outer sheath of the harness. Bend the harness so that you can look inside. If defective you will see copper wires touching one another. If you find that the wires/insulation inside are intact, there’s a good chance the throttle body is not the problem.

It’s also worth the time to take a look at the engine wiring harness. Look particularly at the harness near the temp sensor on the water neck, harness wiring going to the mass air meter, wiring near the injectors, and the wiring harness going to the coils. (make a small slit in outer cover)

WARRANTY

Your repaired throttle body is warranted for a period of two years. If it becomes defective during this period, return it and it will be repaired at no charge. If the unit cannot be repaired, a replacement unit will be forwarded to you without charge. Warranty is to the original purchaser only. No labor charges will be paid.

SHIPPING YOUR THROTTLE BODY

Ship your throttle body with adequate packaging protection. (bubble wrap, foam peanuts, foam wrap, etc) We will notify you if we cannot repair your throttle body. Your payment will be refunded and item will be returned.

The US Postal Service offers quick, reasonable shipping. You can ship in a Flat Rate Priority Mailer box (11X8.5X5.5) for $10.85. This mailer box is free, just ask the Postal Clerk. Your package should arrive in 1-3 days, depending on your zip. Delivery confirmation is recommended. (65 cents) Ship UPS or Fed-Ex if it is more convenient. Your repaired unit will be returned USPS Priority Mail with delivery confirmation.

REPAIR TIME

Repairs will usually take 1-2 days, most of the time it will go out the following day.

Our repair of the Mercedes Throttle body came about when the cost of repair exceeded the budget of most individuals. When the technician has to call the family in and tell them, “you need a new throttle body ($1580) a new wiring harness $700-$800) and most likely a new mass air meter ($400)” most family members need a chair to avoid fainting. We didn’t have the facilities to manufacture wiring harnesses or mass air meters, but we were able to lower the price of the throttle bodies by repairing them.
