This is a SUPER RARE (or should I say, "UBER" RARE) Sapphire Playtape I AM/cassette (Playtape casettes), made by Motorola USA exclusively for Volkswagen vehicles. This unit was removed from a 1972 Super Beetle (should be correct for 68-72, but should fit just about ANY year VW... was replaced by Sapphire Playtape II), and appears to be in very good physical condition. I DO NOT KNOW IF IT WORKS, I HAVE NO WAY TO TEST IT. However, the channel selector needle moves left and right smoothly and effortlessly when you turn the knob, all other function knobs turn smoothly and crisply, and the inside seems to be in nice condition. EVEN IF IT DOESN'T WORK when you apply power, it's an AM transistor radio with a cassette player. You could get every part you'll ever need to repair this radio out at Radio Shack. I'll even include a printed copy of the original service manual (found online) to boot. The faceplate has some pitting in the chrome (see pics) and the "I" mode indicator (should be opposite the "II" above the right knob) looks like it succumbed to a pit forming almost beneath it. Please pay attention to the pics, and ask any questions before bidding.
This is a VERY VERY VERY VERY RARE radio Introduced as a factory option OR aftermarket upgrade for Volkswagen vehicles beginning in the 1968 market, the Playtape was an instant success. Volkswagen dealerships were even commissioned to carry Playtape cassettes on-site! Playtapes can still be had here on eBay, but you'll almost never see one of these factory original VW head units available. DO NOT LET THIS ONE GET AWAY! You get everything pictured; radio, four knobs, rear support bracket, faceplate and two original securing nuts... nothing more and nothing less!
