1967 CHEVROLET CAMARO VINTAGE KEY CHAIN
In 1967, Chevrolet fired their first shots in the pony car wars against the Ford Mustang, coming out with the hot new '67 Camaro. The Camaro was a smash success, outselling the Mustang and capturing the hearts of Americans thirsty for vehicular excitement.
As the internet legend goes, this keychain
was a promotional item concocted by L.H. Averill, a zone manager for GM in
the Michigan territory. It was specifically designed for the new 1967
Camaro (notice the VENT WINDOWS and an absence of side marker lights).
It does not look like a normal key chain, and
is not very practical as a key chain. It may have been originally designed as a rear view mirror ornament.
Anyone who
drove a car in the 50's or 60's, always had something hanging from their mirror,
(tassel, beads, fuzzy dice, pine tree air freshener, rosary, sun crystals,
and feathers were a few items hanging from my mirrors). After several
hundred were made and delivered, they tested the new mirror decoration and
found the heavy cast pendant could chip the windshield or mirror, or fly off
and hit the drivers head.
So, (the story goes) L.H. Averill
looked at it for a couple days, and while playing with it, decided
they could still go through with the promotion, but as a unique key chain.
(Brilliant!!) They sent out letters to local people who had recently ordered
a Camaro (in 1967) and offered them their choice of a few different
promotional gifts.
All of my research and info has come from the
Internet, and nothing has been confirmed. So, 46 years later, I offer Mr. Averill's '67 Camaro keychain, still wrapped in its original wax paper and mounted on its original card stock. Simply a MUST for any owner of a First-Gen Camaro.
