Review from Australian Classic Car, September 2006

Surely, the Jaguar XK engine is one of the most venerable engines of all time. This new publication is in the same vein as others within this series. Des Hammill goes into detail of how to best extract more power from the DOHC engine without spending a zillion dollars.

What I liked about this publication is that it focuses closely on the race-winning D-type version engine and reminds us that it wasn't too dissimilar to the production engine but was still powerful enough to propel the car to just under 180mph. The publication goes into detail on the separate components of the engine including the block, crankshaft, conrods, cylinder head, camshafts, ignition, carburettors and exhaust system. It tells the reader that like other engines, the secret of the XK engine is the cylinder head. We're advised that the best standard head is from the XJ6 Series 111. Luckily, that head fits the 3.4, 3.8 and of course, the 4.2 engines, provided that you plug two of the coolant holes for the smaller engines.

If you're into Jaguars, this is a most useful publication.
