Motul has always been on the forefront of Ester-based oil development, formulating and manufacturing high quality lubricants in France since around the turn of the century. Esters were primarily used in the manufacture of aviation oil, where extreme conditions took the internal combustion engine above and beyond previous thought limits. More recently, esters have been making it into the top of the line racing, and most recently with Motul, street oils.
The benefit of using Esters in motor oil is most evident in its anti-shear properties. The synthetic Motul Double Ester technology allows for a 0% shear loss. When an oil is said to 'shear', it means the action of the high volume oil components in your engine physically breaks the oil molecules apart. The result is a loss in viscosity, which will damage wear components in your engine that rely on a thin but stable film of oil. Modern oils contain additives to help with shear stability, but eventually the only way to prevent breakdown is with oil changes.
