Here's the lower unit to a 20" 1970 Johnson 85 hp outboard.  The engine was in fresh water and was a good runner other than intermittent shifting.  I found that the two main shifting wires (shown in pic) were frayed.

Unfortunately I have too many projects and this one has been sidelined too long, parts are getting misplaced.

The lower unit is an electric shift, and has a clicking solenoid. The prop shaft spins, and the main shaft is loose but doesn't spin.  I've read that these don't shift unless the engine is running, and also power to the solenoid.  If anyone knows how to test this further please contact me!

Otherwise the lower unit has a small chip on the bottom where the prop is.  I don't know where the water pump housing bolts disappeared to.

The splines look sharp and the main housing looks to be in good shape, and beforehand the problem was electrical not mechanical.

Still it's a gamble and this will need to be sold as is.

These are a hassle to package, and also kinda heavy.  Shipping will go FedEx at $65.

Check for more good parts from this engine soon!
