    Hyundai launched a redesign of the Santa Fe on February 14, 2012, to go on sale in June as a 2013 model. Unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show on April 4,[22] the third generation Santa Fe features two wheelbase variants: shorter 5-seat Sport variant and the long-wheelbase version with three rows of seats and available seating for six or seven passengers. The longer Santa Fe also receives a unique grille design, optional 18 inch alloy wheels, flush dual exhaust tips and a body shape that accentuates the crossover’s added passenger and cargo room hind-wise from the B-pillar. Both models feature the new "Storm Edge" design prototype, eventually to launch on all other models, and feature refreshed Santa Fe unibody crossover platform, akin to most of today's SUVs. The extended version replaces the previous Hyundai Veracruz CUV.

    The 2013 Santa Fe Sport models arrives with an all four-cylinder engine lineup. The CUV’s standard engine is a 2.4 L developing 190 horsepower (142 kW), with a 264 horsepower (197 kW) 2.0 L turbo four on offer. Front-wheel drive is standard, with Hyundai’s Torque Vectoring Cornering Control feature for upgraded drive performance. Both engines shift through a six-speed automatic transmission (already found in the Azera sedan), returning up to 33 mpg-US (7.1 L/100 km; 40 mpg-imp) for the naturally aspirated model and 31 mpg-US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg-imp) for the Santa Fe Sport 2.0T model. With 290 horsepower, those numbers were not beaten by a same-class vehicle so far.

    The 2013 Santa Fe Sport went on sale in September 2012 for the North American market, with the long-wheelbase variant following in early 2013, with production to start around November 2012 after the Veracruz ends production.[23] The Korean-spec Santa Fe was launched in asia since April 19, 2012, in short wheel base form with 7-seater capacity. Available engine types are a 2.0L CRDI VGT R-Line and 2.4L CRDI VGT R-Line diesel engines.

    • Variable-geometry turbochargers (VGTs) are a family of turbochargers, usually designed to allow the effective aspect ratio (sometimes called A/R Ratio) of the turbo to be altered as conditions change. This is done because optimum aspect ratio at low engine speeds is very different from that at high engine speeds. If the aspect ratio is too large, the turbo will fail to create boost at low speeds; if the aspect ratio is too small, the turbo will choke the engine at high speeds, leading to high exhaust manifold pressures, high pumping losses, and ultimately lower power output. By altering the geometry of the turbine housing as the engine accelerates, the turbo's aspect ratio can be maintained at its optimum. Because of this, VGTs have a minimal amount of lag, have a low boost threshold, and are very efficient at higher engine speeds. VGTs do not require a wastegate. VGTs tend to be much more common on diesel engines as the lower exhaust temperatures mean they are less prone to failure. The few early gasoline-engine VGTs required significant pre-charge cooling to extend the turbocharger life to reasonable levels, but advances in material technology has improved their resistance to the high temperatures of gasoline engine exhaust and they have started to appear increasingly in, e.g., gasoline-engined sports cars.
