You are looking at a 69 dated 396 L78 Chevy 4 bolt main block
from a Camaro. Block is cast # 3955272 and cast date C69 which is March 6, 1969
for the 69 model year. The suffix code is JH which is 1969 Camaro Chevelle and
Nova L78 375 HP / manual trans. Here is the history on this block. A guy bought
a new L78 69 Camaro in the Philadelphia area. Shortly after buying the car, he
took it to Atco Drag strip in NJ. At the track, he removed the air cleaner but
forgot to remove the gasket around the carburetor. During a pass, a gasket got
sucked into a carb and hung the ventures wide open. The engine spun a rod bearing.
The engine was removed and the short block sent to a local machine shop.
Meanwhile, GM replaced the engine under warranty. The original 396 block, this
block was then lost in basement of the shop for 55 years. I found it last year. The vin stamped in the block is 19N617263. The block is still STANDARD BORE 4.094 bore. There is no ridge and bores look virgin.
This block has been tanked, magnafluxed and shot peened. It checks out good and
I guarantee this to be a good, usable block. The bores look good enough to re-use
STD pistons. The crank line is STD bore looks good. This block has never been
welded, sleeved or repaired in any way. These blocks are not growing on trees
anymore and if you can find an L78 block, it has been blown up dozens of times.
This block is basically virgin, having only been run briefly in 1969. If this
date matches your restoration, do not let it get away.
