MYSTERY SPRINT BARREL - NOT SURE WHAT IT IS FROM AS IT DOES NOT SEEM TO TIE UP WITH SPECIFICATION OF MOST POSSIBLE BIKES I CAN THINK OF????
FINS HAVE BEEN REDUCED SO THAT THE ENGINE WOULD WARM UP QUICKER FOR SPRINT USE. THE BORE HAS A LAYER OF LIGHT SURFACE RUST BUT LOOKS GOOD. THE BARREL IS 160MM LONG AND THE BOTTOM FLANGE IS 18MM THICK ABOVE A 10 MM LONG LOWER SPIGOT. THE MOUNTING HOLES ARE AT 3 3/8  (ACROSS PUSH ROD DIRECTION) X 2 1/2 INCH CENTRES AT THE BASE AND HEAD BOLT CENTRES ARE AT 3 X 3 3/8 INCHES IN SAME ORIENTATION. THERE ARE 4 CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS AND A COPPER HEAD GASKET. 
THE PISTON IS USED AND IS 79MM DIAMETER WITH GUDGEON PIN BUT NO PISTON RINGS , IT IS STAMPED AS '796/7 OT' ON THE TOP AND THERE IS ALSO 'T2'. THERE ARE 3 RING GROOVES (2 COMPRESSION AND 1 OIL CONTROL) PLUS THERE ARE OIL HOLES BELOW THE RING GROOVES. THERE ARE TWO VALVE CLEARANCE CUT OUTS IN THE TOP OF THE PISTON.
STANDARD SIZE 79MM BORE FITS FOR A NORTON ES2 OR MODEL 18 BARREL - 500CC SINGLE ENGINE BUT THEY ARE USUALLY WITH THROUGH STUDS FROM THE HEAD TO THE CRANKCASE WITHOUT SUCH A SUBSTANTIAL BASE FLANGE.
THE LOWER FLANGE LOOKS SIMILAR TO AJS/MATCHLESS PRACTICE BUT THEN THEY DID NOT USE 79MM BORE?? AGAIN ARIEL AND JAP DID NOT USE A 79MM BORE SO ITS ORIGINAL APPLICATION IS A MYSTERY??? - ANY IDEAS?
