I was having trouble getting the controller to sync up to the unit. But it does work without the controller as well. If you want the break away unit ebay sells them for around $65 for the unit and cord. Not sure but the cord for break away unit might have to be plugged in for the controller to sync up. Anyway selling a working unit but as i said the controller was iffy.
