Tired of going on deck to hoist, drop and furl the main sail?? Here's a snazzy solution!!
I'm old school and prefer a conventional main sail, stackpack and lazy jacks. So I'm selling the entire Forespar Coastal Leisure Furl system from my 1984 Island Packet 31. It will work on any sloop-rigged sail boat with a boom about 15 feet long.
This includes a U shaped aluminum boom, an aluminum mandrel with furling drum that fits inside the boom, aluminum track sections that slide up the mast slot and are tightened in place, plastic track pieces that fit onto the aluminum track up the mast, a custom bracket with standup block that attaches at the top of the mast for the main halyard, a rigid boom vang, and lots of hardware.
How does it work, you may ask? When furled, the main sail is rolled around the mandrel inside the boom with a short section of the head of the sail remaining in the vertical plastic track. When you want the main sail hoisted, you adjust the topping lift and boom vang ropes to a set position that aligns the boom to an 87 degree angle with the mast. Then you hoist away from the cockpit. Time to drop the main? First, align the topping lift and boom vang to achieve that magic 87 degree angle. The furling line is permanently fed from inside the boom through blocks on the deck and back to the cockpit. Release the main halyard and haul on the furling line to lower and furl the main back onto the boom mandrel.
Want to reef for weather? Release the main halyard and pull the furling line to lower the main sail to the desired reefing point. The factory states that there are an infinite number of reefing points. I tend to reef until one of the battens (they're horizontal) is just above the boom, which gives you five reefing points. By comparison, my new conventional mainsail only has two reefing points!!
I will happily spend a few hours with you discussing how to install and operate this rig!! New, this system cost about 13000 bucks without the special main sail. I'm selling it with the special main sail in good to very good condition. The main sail has brand new teflon luff tape, making it easier to pull up and down the mast.
What will you need to install this system? I'd suggest working with a local rigger unless you're really handy. What parts will you need to install this? I am NOT INCLUDING the mast gooseneck brackets or the rope boom vang. I used the mast gooseneck brackets with my replacement boom to avoid drilling more holes in my mast. And I needed a conventional rope boom vang. Dale at Forespar tells me that a set of mast gooseneck brackets costs about 250. My local rigger in Painesville thinks he has a set of those brackets at his shop and will sell.
Contact me with questions. This is obviously not a cleat that you simply screw to the deck!!
This furling system is large and about 150 pounds weight. PICKUP ONLY. I'll deliver up to 50 miles on my long trailer AFTER payment,
