What is a Diesel DOC?
Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) is a device installed in the exhaust system of diesel vehicles.
Its main role is to reduce carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and some particulate matter (PM) in the exhaust gas through oxidation reaction, while also oxidizing nitric oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), creating better working conditions for subsequent exhaust treatment devices (such as SCR systems).
DOC usually contains precious metals such as platinum and palladium as catalysts, which can promote oxidation reactions at relatively low temperatures.
For example, in a long-distance diesel truck, DOC can effectively reduce harmful gas emissions in the exhaust, so that it meets more stringent environmental standards. When the exhaust passes through the DOC, the CO and HC in it react with oxygen and are converted into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O), thus reducing environmental pollution.
How diesel DOC works
Oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) : the CO in the tail gas reacts with oxygen (O₂) under the action of the catalyst to produce carbon dioxide (CO₂).
Equation: 2CO + O₂ → 2CO₂
Oxidation of hydrocarbons (HC) : HC reacts with O₂ to form CO₂ and water (H₂O).
Equation: CₓHₙ + (x + n/4)O₂ → xCO₂ + (n/2)H₂O
Oxidation of particulate matter (PM) : DOC can promote the oxidation of some soluble organic components (SOF) and reduce PM emissions.
Oxidation of nitric oxide (NO) : NO is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂).
Equation: 2NO + O₂ → 2NO₂
