The Union Jack is simply the "Union" or canton of the US Ensign and has been the official Jack of the United States Navy from 1777 until it was temporarily replaced by the First Navy Jack at the directive of the Secretary of the Navy in 2002. However, the Union Jack is still in use on all other government vessels including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the US Coast Guard and the Military Sealift Command.
There are some very specific rules that pertain to the use of the Union Jack. First, as with all jacks, it is to be flown only from the jackstaff at the bow of the vessel and should never be flown ashore or at the stern of the vessel. Aboard naval and government vessels, the Jack should only be flown during daylight hours and only when the ship is at anchor.
The correct size of the Union Jack is dictated by the size of the Ensign. It should always be the same size as the canton of the Ensign.
The proper and customary use for private vessels is restricted to hoisting only while in port during daylight hours and only on Sundays and holidays.
