The transmission mainshaft is supported at the front by bearings at the input shaft and in the center by case mounted bearings, and by a bushing at the rear. When the transmission is disassembled, inspect the mainshaft splines for cracks, twisting or other damage. Check the bearings surfaces and gear journals for any signs of wear or scoring that would prevent bearing function or gear rotation. Each gear should turn freely on the shaft without binding or excessive play. Measure shaft runout to check for a bent condition.

If inspection determines the need for a new mainshaft, get the one that's designed and specifically manufactured for your Jeep.
