10 POUND RESIDUAL DRUM BRAKE LINE PRESSURE CHECK VALVE
Brand new ~ ten pound residual pressure check valve is used to compensate for return spring tension in the drums.
There are two different uses for residual valves. The 10 lb valve is used to hold a residual pressure to the drum brakes to give a higher firmer pedal, and since it will keep brake pressure on the drums at all times, it gives you better response when you hit your brakes.
When the master cylinder is under the floor it is usually lower than the brake calipers. Gravity and vibration can cause brake fluid to siphon back to the master cylinder away from the calipers, causing a loss of brake pressure, thus causing excessive caliper piston retraction and a longer brake pedal stroke.
When your brake pedal bleeds of pressure, many times it is because the calipers are actually higher than the master cylinder, then the in-line residual valves are a must! This residual valve will act as a one way check valve that prevents this type of bleed-back.
The 2 lb valve is used in the disc when the master cylinder is lower than the calipers to prevent back siphoning or “bleed-back” of the brake fluid from the master. The minimal two pound residual pressure prevents fluid from flowing back without causing the brakes to drag.
In-line pressure valves retain a minimum brake line pressure to help eliminate excessive pedal travel in both disc and drum brake systems.
