A transmission oil cooler is a liquid-to-air heat exchanger similar to a radiator or A/C condenser. A system of tubes carrying the liquid (transmission fluid) is attached to thin metal plates called fins. The heat from the fluid is transferred to the fins where it can be removed by air passing through the cooler.
