If your bike's fuel and temperature gauge are both inoperative or dropping intermittently the odds are that the auxiliary voltage regulator has failed or is failing. Honda no longer has this regulator in their inventory. The auxiliary voltage regulator for the fuel gauge and the temperature gauge is a very important component that drops the batteries 12 volts to 7 volts.  Not only must the voltage be correct but the amperage must also be sufficient to drive the gauges while at the same time having a heat-sink built in to absorb the heat that is generated by the process.  If it malfunctions by burning out completely or dropping below 7 volt output neither of those components will operate even if both gauges and their sensors are perfectly functional otherwise. The gauges themselves can be damaged permanently if they are connected directly to a 12-volt source. Why settle for a used unit at a salvage yard for $50.00 or more when you can get a brand new unit. The item we are offering in this auction is an aftermarket product. It fits in the recess when the original part is removed. The schematic (below on the left) shows the 1975 bike where the regulator is behind the left side panel. It is in the same place on the 1976 & 1977 bikes. On the 78 and 79 GL1000 and on all of the GL1100/1200 and 500 models with analog instruments a smaller regulator (similar to the picture below on the right) is located behind the fuel & temperature gauges or in some cases the headlight. If it is under the gauge console it can be accessed by removing the console. A regulator is not required for the later bikes with digital instrumentation.
