Rubber bushings are most often used by vehicle manufacturers because they are inexpensive and provide a quiet, soft ride. For most drivers, who rarely push their vehicles to near their limitations, rubber works fine. However, if you push your vehicle, whether it's off-road or high performance street driving, rubber can negatively affect vehicle handling and performance. Rubber has much more give, and rubber bushings compress excessively before the corresponding suspension part moves. This can result in a spongy ride and imprecise handling. Rubber is also negatively affected by the environment. Ozone, oils and abrasive dust and dirt can all cause rubber bushings to crack, rot and degrade.
Polyurethane bushings are much firmer than rubber. Because they won't compress excessively during suspension operation, component motion will be much more precise, for a firmer ride and more precise handling. And because polyurethane is impervious to ozone and most chemicals, your ride and handling will remain firm and precise, without the gradual degradation that is typical of rubber. Polyurethane bushings are direct replacements for the original equipment rubber bushings, and special tools are usually not required for installation.
