It's good to have a vehicle along for the ride when you've got your motorhome or camper parked at a campsite, especially if you're hooked up to the water, sewer and power for an extended stay. It can take an hour to unhook, button up the inside of the camper and pull out, and another hour to spot the camper back into your camping spot, hook everything back up and go back to relaxing. That's a big deal if you're just running into town for groceries and beer. Towing a dinghy behind the motorhome gives you options. You could tow just about anything with a tow dolly, but they're a pain to load and unload, and you can't really back up with one attached. The preferred method is flat-towing. For this, you'll need a vehicle that's flat-tow capable, like a small 4x4 with a transfer case you can put in neutral, or a car with a manual transmission. (You can't tow an automatic with the drive wheels on the ground; it will fry the transmission, which relies on a running engine for lubrication.)

You'll need to do a little fabrication to attach a tow bar to your towed vehicle, but after that installing or removing the tow bar is just a matter of two pins. The advantage to a tow bar with 2-piece arms is that you can break it down into a smaller package that will fit in the trunk of even a small vehicle.
