The differential houses the limited slip mechanism and provides a precision mounting for the ring gear. It rotates on the differential case bearings, transforming the turning action of the pinion gear into the drive for the rear wheels. The differential case must be strong enough to handle the horsepower from the engine without flexing or distorting, to make sure critical dimensions like pinion depth and backlash remain constant.
