If dirt or metal particles enter this small space, the crankshaft and bearings can become scored. In fact, that thin film of oil (typically just 0.002") mentioned above can disappear for other reasons other than foreign particles. Bearings can wear with use, they can be starved of oil if there is a pump or clogged oil passage problem, and they can also become fatigued due to detonation or engine lugging.

Most plain bearings are constructed with a steel backing that provides support, with overlays of copper and/or lead alloy, and final surface coating of Babbitt material, to provide a soft surface if shaft contact is made and to collect contaminants that would otherwise damage the crankshaft. Symptoms of rod bearing failure include knocking, particularly at engine startup, and low oil pressure.
