| This is a Good Used Original 1955 55 Chevrolet Chevy Optional Oil Filter Canister used with 265 V8 and without Air Conditioning. Yes, this oil filter was an option on 1955 265 CID engines as the original 3703524 casting number block had no provision for the oil filter canister like the later 1956 and later Chevrolet V-8 engines had. NOTE: This is a file photo similar to what we are offering. The 1955 block actually had a crankcase vent pipe that went through the area that was used for canister oil filters on the later engines. As a result, Chevrolet offered an "optional" oil filter that incorporated a built in bracket that went under the thermostat housing with longer bolts and had a gasket on both sides of the bracket to seal it to the intake and the thermostat housing. The oil came from a tiny fitting on the front of the block above the timing cover, through a small copper oil line into the oil filter and then the filtered oil would run back into a fitting in the intake and drain back into the valley! I know it is hard to believe in this day and age, that an oil filter was optional, but this was the first year of production for the "new small V-8" engine that came out in late 1954. We believe that this was only used on passenger cars and possibly Chevy Trucks, not on Corvettes due to a hood clearance problem. There is no internal filter included with this canister, but is available at $25 extra cost if needed.
