Background There are a number of guides to repairing a turbocharger found online. None of these guides mention checking any specs at all or re machining anything. Some of them involve using vice grips. None of these guides are written by a turbocharger professional they are just educated guesses.
We have attempted to create a guide that addresses the shortcomings of the guides found online and we have attempted to create a guide that fills the gaps that many diesel mechanics may have in turbocharger knowledge. Please note this guide is a general guide that also contains specific information regarding the T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger manufactured by Garrett Honeywell: the specific information regarding tolerances and dimensions ONLY relates to this specific turbo. Torque settings machining tolerances etc. should NOT be generalized from this guide to cover any turbocharger other than the T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family family of turbos. SO: Rebuilding the Garrett T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger is relatively simple and easy to do under the following conditions
· Your T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger does not have damage to the wheels · Your T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger does not have damage to the turbine shaft · Your T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger does not have damage to the bearing housing · Your T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger does not have damage to the compressor or turbine housing
If your T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger had damage to these above listed parts these parts must be replaced. Additionally there are published wear tolerances for the T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family of turbochargers and once these tolerances are exceeded the T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger must be brought back into spec using oversized bearings and rebalancing of components and or the entire assembly.
The only time a T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger may be rebuilt and not rebalanced is if there is no measurable wear or if no parts have been replaced. If a T3/T4 T04E T0B4 family turbocharger has had its bearings and seals replaced and NO other major parts have been repaired it is still recommended that the entire rotating assembly be rebalanced.
