Concept Car of the Week: BMW Turbo (1972)

Built by Michelotti in Turin and unveiled at the 1972 Paris motor show, the BMW Turbo was built both as a symbol of the carmaker's strength after its troubles in the ‘60s and as a celebration of that summer's Olympic Games in Munich. This two-door coupe, based on a modified 2002 chassis with a mid-mounted engine, was born when BMW's design director Paul Bracq convinced the board to let him design a concept that would be part design exercise, part technology testbed. Safety had become an increasingly important consideration following a number of design summits in the early ‘70s, and Bracq used the Turbo to test out a number of safety solutions.

Art Center College of Design Summer Show 2007

Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, held its summer semester show in August, one of three graduation shows per year. The show featured work from 14 graduating students in the Bachelor of Science - Transportation Design program. Looking, perhaps for the first time, real competition for the Bentley Continental GT, the S63 AMG Coupe has proper presence and looks set to the the benchmark in its class, something the old CL63 AMG never really managed. Power comes from AMG’s twin-turbo 5.5 litre V8 with 577bhp – up 37bhp on the CL 63 AMG – and 663lb/ft of torque, enough to hit 62mph in 4.3 seconds, despite which it comes with an official economy rating of 27.4mpg.
