This auction is for a Chilton repair manual for Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager for 1984-1988.

It is soft cover, 277 pages, copyright 1989. Condition is good with minor creasing but no tears or marks. It’s a book, so it will ship via media mail (see note 2).

NOTE 1: There is no such thing as free shipping even though  some genius at ebay thinks there is. Obviously S&H is included in the starting bid on this item. The Free Shipping does NOT apply outside the contiguous 48 states. There may be an additional charge to ship outside the continental lower 48 states. Also, if this item is returned, actual shipping charges will NOT be refunded.

NOTE 2: I previously favored a flat S&H fee. In the past year,  I have received just one  negative feedback from someone too ignorant to understand the main advantage of a flat S&H fee; to put all bidders on equal footing regardless of their zip code.

Here’s what happened:

On 3/4/12, buyer artt_vandelay was high bidder on my auction for a book.

The auction clearly stated that I would use economy shipping with delivery in 2 to 11 business days.

The auction also clearly stated S&H would be a flat fee of $7 (not having mailed a book before, I made a best guess estimate), and stressed that bidders should consider the flat fee when placing bids.

I shipped within 24 hours of his payment via media mail.

AFTER the book was already shipped, I received an email from buyer wanting tracking info. Economy shipping does not include tracking info unless the listing so states.

On day 7, he sends me an insulting email complaining he has not yet received it and I should have used tracking (as if that would make any difference).

On day 8, he receives the book, well within the forcast delivery time contained in the listing, and posts negative feedback, without contacting me first to try and resolve his perceived problems.

On the same day he posted feedback, he tried to open an ebay Buyer Protection case saying he did not receive the item!

His feedback complains the item was damaged, which is highly unlikely; it was a hard cover book, wrapped in pastic, and shipped in a fresh box used by national book sellers for this size book. Frankly, I think he was merely lying to create an irrelevant issue.

He complained the flat fee, which was clearly explained in the listing, was a profit scam. This is laughable. It was just $3 higher than actual mailing cost, not enough to cover the cost of box, packing, ebay/PayPal fees, and special trip to post office to mail promptly.

If I can just pull this scam a few more times, I can retire to Hawaii.

He posted feedback without contacting me to try and resolve any of his perceived problems.

The lessons to be learned here:

For Buyers: don’t be a moron.

If you want special handling procedures, let the seller know BEFORE the item is shipped, and I ship promptly after payment.

READ the listing and don’t complain afterward about something clearly stated in the listing.

If you have a problem, try and resolve it with the seller before posting feedback.

For Sellers: although most buyers are reasonable people with common sense, there are a few jerks out there. Ebay provides no  recourse for unjustified negative feedback. I highly recommend that you check out the feedback left by this guy for other sellers and place him on your blocked buyer list.

Minicars perform poorly in crash tests, study says

Tue, 14 Apr 2009

Minicars made by Toyota, Honda and Daimler AG did poorly on frontal crash tests with mid-sized automobiles, prompting an influential safety organization to suggest consumers consider buying larger cars that have comparable fuel economy. The Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and Smart ForTwo all collapsed upon impact into the space around the driver dummy, according to the study released today by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Drivers in all three vehicles faced high risk of head and leg injuries after test collisions at 40 miles an hour, even after airbags inflated, said the non-profit group funded by auto insurers.

Toyota & Lexus: Hybrid sales in Europe hit 20%

Tue, 16 Apr 2013

The ‘Green’ evangelists want to get us all driving electric cars to save the planet, but in the real world car drivers want a car that offers them all the practicality of a normal ICE car, but without the penalties of the poor range, high cost and inconvenience of an EV. So, with ever-rising fuel costs, it’s no wonder car buyers are willing to pay a little more for a car that offers better economy at the pumps – which plays straight in to the hands of Hybrid pioneers Toyota. The result is that Toyota and Lexus now see a full 20 per cent of their sale in Europe being hybrid cars in the first quarter of 2013, with sales of hybrid cars up a massive 82 per cent year-on-year.

The Great Texas Beer Run

Thu, 17 Feb 2011

For reasons still not clear, boatloads of German immigrants made Texas their home in the 1800s. What they thought they would find similar to their cold, richly forested homeland in the hellaciously hot, mes-quite-scrub, rattlesnake-filled Texas Hill Country is lost to history. Worse, they brought almost nothing with them from the Old World to remind them of home.
