One Lap of the Web: Motel kitsch, Bentley dragsters and rusting Porsches

Fri, 23 May 2014

-- The roach motel lives on in these postcards from Petrolicious. The Googie signs and modernist architecture jump from the Howard Johnsons and Travelodges of the 1950s, when buildings were built in color. For a precious few decades in the tapestry of American interstate travel, before they became the refuge of schlocky horror movies, the motor hotel was the true King of the Road.

The Porsche P1 is lighter, greener and more exclusive than McLaren's new hypercar

Mon, 27 Jan 2014

Long before the legendary Porsche 911 -- before, even, the Porsche 356 -- Ferdinand Porsche was tinkering with alternative powertrains and designing road-worthy vehicles. Though it wasn't the first vehicle to bear his name, the “Egger-Lohner electric vehicle, C.2 Phaeton model” was the earliest result of his efforts. Perhaps getting the jump on the modern alpha-numeric craze/plague, it was shortened to a simple “P1.” The P1 (we'll refer to it as the Porsche P1 from here on out to avoid confusion) made its first appearance in Vienna on June 26, 1898, and it didn't last long in the public eye: Before Porsche decided to pull it out and put it on display, it had reportedly been sitting in a warehouse, untouched, since 1902.

Range Rover the must-have car this Christmas?

Thu, 26 Dec 2013

Eartha Kitt may have asked ‘Santa Baby’ for a ’54 convertible for Christmas, but when it comes to the rest of us, it would appear that British is best. That’s according to a survey of 55,000 petrolheads by airport and online car competitions company, Best of the Best. In the poll, not only did the Range Rover claim top spot, it also grabbed third and fourth position, with only the Aston Martin Vantage stopping the luxury off-roader from making it a perfect one, two, three.
