Volkswagen aims for lofty Beetle sales

The attractive new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle is expected to sell as many as 50,000 to 60,000 units a year in the United States. The car launches this fall. That level will be a big improvement over the latter years of the outgoing model, in which sales dwindled to just 15,000 a year, but it remains lower than the record figure of 83,000 achieved 18 months after the launch of the revised model.

The facelift has meant a revised model lineup across the E Class range with just two trim levels, with the entry-level model getting SE trim – but only for the E 220 CDI – and the AMG Sport available across all engine options - E 220 CDI, E 250 CDI and E 350 BlueTEC diesels and E200 petrol. Both trim levels come with COMAND, DAB, speed sensitive electric steering, partial LEDs, Active Park Assist, Attention Assist and Collision Prevention Assist, with the SE getting 17″ alloys, Sport grill, leather, heated front seats and aluminium trim. Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment crowns first Sketchmaster

College for Creative Studies (CCS) student Graham Wright has fought off competition from artists, illustrators, industrial, product and car designers to be declared the Sketchmaster of the Middlecott Sketchbattle Experiment 2014. Held at Detroit's Kunsthalle Museum of Contemporary Art, the contest – a self-styled fight club of design – carried the theme of lighting because of the museum's many neon and lighting installations. Before the event, design students from the area – mostly from the CCS and Lawrence Technological University (LTU) – were invited to submit early sketches before a shortlist was drawn up for the main event.
