Featuring: Herb Neumann & Ron Accornero

Running Time: 75 minutes. Learn how to take old starters and recondition them so they operate like new again.

This video has four sections:

  • Introduction: History of the Model A Starter, including some restoration tips.
  • Part 1: Disassembly of your old starter. How to remove each component, cautions about protecting parts, cleaning advice and demonstrations.
  • Part 2: Reassembly as a 6-volt starter. If you wish to restore your starter to the original 6-volt configuration, all you need to do is follow instructions of our experts. When you are done, and have repainted the newly rebuilt unit, it will look like it just came from the factory floor.
  • Part 3: Converting your unit to a 12-volt operation. Many Model A'ers are converting their cars to 12-volt electrical systems and would prefer to use a 12-volt starter rather than a 6-volt starter. There are many potential problems caused by "firing up" a 6-volt unit using 12-volts of power...not the least of which is that sometimes things break, and that can be dangerous. Our experts show you how to make a starter that will be compatible with your new electrical system and last for many years of satisfactory use.

Herb Neumann and Ron Accornero are the experts who take you on this guided exploration of the restoration process. Before you can think of a question, they have given you the answer.

EPA makes it official--greenhouse gases are pollutants

Tue, 08 Dec 2009

On the eve of an international climate summit, the EPA on Monday formally declared greenhouse gases to be dangerous pollutants, strengthening President Barack Obama's hand and laying the groundwork for a new 35.5 mpg standard for light vehicles. The finding is likely to have a greater impact on electric utilities, oil companies and manufacturers than on the auto industry. The EPA's scientific finding reported that these gases “are the primary driver of climate change,” which can intensify heat waves and increase ozone pollution linked to asthma and other respiratory illnesses.

One Lap of the Web: Turning second-hand clothes into Ferraris, drumming on the highway and 'Fast & Furious 6'

Wed, 22 May 2013

We spend a lot of time on the Internet -- pretty much whenever we're not driving, writing about or working on cars. Since there's more out there than we'd ever be able to cover, here's our daily digest of car stuff on the Web you may not otherwise have heard about. -- The next time you run out of gas, just pull out a drum kit until help arrives.

BAC Mono finally hits the U.S. (video)

Sat, 26 Jan 2013

Sector 111 – US importers of the epic BAC Mono – have finally revealed the first US Mono at Cars and Coffee in Irvine, California. It’s more than a year since we reported that Sector 111 would be offering the BAC Mono in the US and now, having completely sold their 2012 allocation of just 12 Monos, the first US built (well, bolted together from a CKD kit by Sector 111) has been revealed to petrolheads at the Cars and Coffee meet in Irvine, California. And the Cars & Coffee meeting is a great place for Sector 111 to show off their first Mono as its attended by a bunch of knowledgeable and wealthy Californians, just the sort of potential buyer Sector 111 are looking for.
