Tokyo motor shows: past, present and future

By Tim Pollard Motor Shows 20 August 2009 09:30 As bets in this topsy-turvy, unpredictable industry go, it’s a banker: of all the motor shows on the global calendar, the Tokyo exhibit is always the barmiest. Although the Chinese shows are rising in importance – and amusement value –  there’s something peculiarly bonkers about the biannual Japanese bash held in downtown Tokyo. So strange is the exhibition at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba City to westerners, that you don’t bat an eyelid at talking cars, vehicles with feelings, or cars designed for dogs.

Subaru showed two other concepts alongside the Levorg at the Tokyo Motor Show – both of which are interesting, neither of which came with very much information. The Subaru Viziv Evolution proposes a three-motor hybrid all-wheel drive system, similar to that under development by Honda, while the Subaru Cross Sport Design concept appears to be nothing less than a shooting brake estate version of the BRZ. Nissan reinvents its Popular Qashqai Crossover

FANS of the school run can rejoice as Nissan has given one of the nation’s most popular SUVs a makeover. The firm has unveiled its latest generation Qashqai, and you’ll be able to get your hands on one from February 2014. With bold claims of having reinvented its crossover model, Nissan is boasting of low emissions and fuel consumption figures plus the inclusion of high levels of safety-related technology for its new car.
