Guggenheim to auction BMW M1 art car

The Guggenheim Museum in New York is selling an original BMW M1 art car to raise funds and to make way for other exhibits. Frank Stella painted the Bavarian supercar in 1979, and it has been part of the Guggenheim collection since 1999. BMW has commissioned many art cars since the program launched in 1975, including another M1 by Andy Warhol and a 3.0 CSL also by Stella.

The new Focus BEV (battery electric vechicle) is a working prototype and not bound for production – yet, although that is the longer term intention. Is the Goodwood Festival of Speed just an excuse for petrolheads to gather, or do supercar makers actually see sales rise as a result? If you’re a real petrolhead, there really is no better car show on earth than the Goodwood Festival of Speed (which starts this weekend). Yes, other car shows offer some of what Goodwood does – Villa D’Este, Pebble Beach and Salon Prive are all very good – but none have the depth of petrolhead goodness you’ll find on offer at Goodwood.
