Plans for Smart’s three-seat sports car uncovered in patent drawings

Mercedes-Benz is developing a three-seat sports car for Smart. Depicted here in a series of European patent-application sketches obtained by AutoWeek, the radical new sports car forms part of an extended range of new Smart models planned for introduction by the middle of the next decade, including a more conventional four-seater to be produced in cooperation with Renault. Mercedes-Benz is reacting to increased competition from Toyota in the form of the iQ and the impending arrival of similar urban-based offerings from premium-brand rivals Audi and BMW.

Charity calls for parking on pavements ban

Campaigners are calling for a change in the law that would ban vehicles from parking on pavements. The Guide Dogs charity has branded drivers that block the pavement “inconsiderate and dangerous”, with seven out of 10 people backing restrictions that would keep the footpath clear for pedestrians. CDN announces judging panel for Car Design Awards 2010

In line with the competition's aims, the judging panel comprises both Western and Chinese design chiefs, who will be awarding prizes to student entrants which include placements at an international design school. Chairing the panel for the Car Design Awards China 2010 competition will be Peter Stevens, the designer behind the McLaren F1 road car, Lotus Elan and Subaru Impreza P1 among others, and a visiting Professor of Vehicle Design at London's Royal College of Art.
