The 911 was originally launched at this very event, way back in 1963. At the 2013 Frankfurt IAA, Porsche is paying homage to its home-grown hero with a new 911 50 Years Edition, based on the latest 991-series Carrera S.

Peugeot’s revamped saloon and estate range goes on UK sale this autumn, with prices likely to start around £20,000. The Passat rival looks refreshed by a new nose: the grille is larger, with the lion badge taking up residence there having deserted the bonnet.

Half a generation from the promise to the reality, and endless hiccups with lease and buy-back plans in the US – where Lexus initially refused to sell the LFA – meant many of the headlines were less than positive. Which is a real shame.
