GARMIN 496 Aviation GPS I am selling my Garmin 496 (with instructional CD) and my Garmin 296 as seen in the photo. Before I offered these for sale I took everything in the picture to Don Weil who has the aviation radio shop in Harlingen, Texas. He is well known and has been in the same location for many years. His is phone number is 956-330-3489 and can be contacted regarding these units. He said that the 496 was in good working order but that the 296 was not. He said it would have to be sent to Garmin for repairs. He said it might be something simple (and inexpensive), but he was not equipped to repair the 296. At the present time both units will turn on indicating that each battery is in operating condition. Since both have a "cigarette lighter" connection they can be used in the car, the boat or the plane whether the battery is operating or not. The picture shows each item that is being offered. From the top left to the right the first item is the antennae for remote operation, the round item at the top is a weighted receiver so in rough air (or rough water) the receiver doesn't move around, then there are two ear phones that are battery operated. They are particularly helpful when listening to Serius radio whether you're in the car or the plane. Next to the ear phones is the yoke mount and on the left hand side there is another yoke mount (aluminum). Next to the mount is the "voice" for the GPS when the 496 is in voice mode and you are driving in the car. Underneath that is another round remote antennae for the 496. Next to that is the Garmin 496. Then back to the left and underneath the aluminum yoke mount is the antennae that fits on either the 496 or the 296 so if you're carrying it on a camping trip you can use either unit for direction, weather, music, etc. Directly under the 496 is the 296 and to the left of the 296 plug in to the cigarette lighter, and to the left of that is the charger for the batteries. The batteries in each unit are rechargeable and if they are low then they can be recharged before buying new ones. The batteries that come with the unit last a long time. Below the 296 is the owner's manual, and to the left of that is another remote antennae. To the right of the owner's Manuel is the carrying case. I made some notes on the face of the manual but not in the text. All the pages are there, in good condition, none missing or torn. The notes on the face are the radio ID and other information for the 496 that you will probably need anyway. I am selling these GPS units because I have changed to IPad Foreflight for my day to day flying. I probably used everything you see in the picture for 2 to 3 years before I changed to Foreflight. The weather display is wonderful, as I'm sure you know if you fly a lot, and I can only admire Garmin for everything they get into such a small unit. Many pilots carry the 496 with them as a back up to their panel display. Neither of these units shows any wear at all. They stayed in my flight bag, out of the weather and were well cared for. I fly a Cessna 182 about 125 hours a year, so you can see in the 2 or 3 years that I was flying they didn't get much use. The instructional CD is from Sporty's and very helpful in getting started with this unit. |

Volvo’s KERS system improves performance and cuts fuel use.
Thu, 27 Mar 2014The Volvo S60 with KERS Flywheel (pictured) boosts economy and performance As car makers continue to get bashed by more and more stringent CO2 targets from governments around the world, cleverer solutions are called for to squeeze the best performance and economy balance possible from their products. And Volvo’s new Flywheel KERS system does look promising. Volvo are currently running UK tests of a KERS flywheel system developed by Flybrid Automotive, which takes kinetic energy generated under braking and stores it in a flywheel fitted to the back axle.
