Surveillance for Busy Airspace

IFR-certified 250 W transponder
Optional 1090 MHz ES broadcast technology
Easy-to-read LCD display
Traffic Information System (TIS-A) alerts on compatible displays
Pressure altitude, dedicated VFR squawk button and more
A panel-mounted Mode S digital transponder series with traffic datalink capability and dedicated pushbutton keys for squawk code selection, the GTX 330 family brings ATC aircraft surveillance to new levels of precision, reliability and performance.
Leading the Way to ADS-B with Optional ES Upgrade

Optionally available with available ES, or Extended Squitter, technology the GTX 330 takes the lead in providing an affordable pathway to ADS-B compliance for the Next Generation airspace system. Using precise GPS-referenced positioning information, the extended squitter technology enables transponders to automatically transmit more accurate, and more useful, traffic surveillance data — including aircraft flight ID, position, altitude, velocity, climb/descent, and heading information (compared to traditional Mode S and Mode C transponders, which can only broadcast altitude, and thus require ground-based radar to correlate and identify the aircraft's position).
Do I have an ES transponder? Does it meet current ADS-B "Out" requirements?

To understand if your GTX 330 is an ES version, pay attention to the splash screen when your avionics are being powered on. You'll see either "GTX 330" or "GTX 330 ES." This should make it clear which version you have. The same is true of the remote GTX 33. It should be noted that the GTX 23 is only available with an ES.

GTX 330

GTX 330, Extended Squitter version

If you do not have an ES version, an upgrade is available starting at $1,200. For customers with an existing ES transponder, an update to meet the ADS-B requirements will be free of charge. However, some labor and handling charges may apply. Your Garmin dealer can make arrangements for this upgrade.
Upgrading Your GTX

Existing GTX ES transponders need to have their software updated before they are ADS-B compliant. You can get this upgrade right from your authorized Garmin dealer. Upgrades from a non-ES transponder to an ES transponder will require your dealer to ship the unit back to Garmin for the upgrade.
Will the GTX 330 ES, GTX 33 ES or GTX 23 ES transponders display traffic via the FAA’s TIS-B ADS-B uplink? The ES transponders currently have the capability to uplink the FAA’s TIS-A traffic (consult the question below regarding differences between TIS-A and TIS-B traffic). There are currently no plans to update the transponder to uplink from TIS-B.
Traffic in Simulcast

Certified to TSO-C166b authorization for 1090 MHz extended squitter transmission, the ES upgrade improves upon the existing transponder query system while working seamlessly with existing ATC protocols. The ADS-B reports provide ground controllers with considerably faster updates than traditional radar. And by simultaneously broadcasting this information to TAS or TCAS equipped aircraft, it enables them to essentially see the same traffic picture for their location that ATC is watching on the ground. Thus, with everyone in the ADS-B loop watching and reacting to the same flight trajectories, safe separation is far easier to maintain.
Quality Shows Through

All the features of the standard GTX 330 transponder are retained in the ES version: Solid-state design, 250-watt transmitter, remote ident and auto standby, altitude monitor with voice alerts, TIS-A traffic interface, and an easy-to-read LCD display that reverses its numbers out of black for optimal viewing in all lighting conditions. A dedicated VFR squawk code button makes entering the numbers quick and easy. And a variety of useful timing and display functions include flight time, count-up and count-down timers, plus current pressure altitude. The GTX 330 can also be used to satisfy the European mandate for Mode S level 2 surveillance. And an antenna diversity option is added with the GTX 330D for improved air-to-air surveillance of TCAS-equipped aircraft flying above you.

Frankfurt Motor Show news review: making sense of the 2013 IAA show

Wed, 11 Sep 2013

Newspress Frequently the car that attracts people’s attention at motor shows is an exotic-looking beast that everyone ‑ creators included ‑ know will never see the grind of a production line. Unusually, at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show press day, the car on everyone’s lips was a model that many journalists have already driven, and for which dealers are already taking orders: the BMW i3. With its skinny tyres and boxy, upright stance, the all-electric model isn’t as easy on the eye as the usual headline-grabbers.

Kia Pop concept (2010) first official pictures

Wed, 18 Aug 2010

These are the first pictures of Kia's new 2010 electric concept car, the Pop, which is due to make its debut at the Paris motor show on 30 September. Details on the new Kia Pop are sketchy, but at 3m long and with a triple-seat arrangement, it could be that Kia has its sights set on creating a rival to the Toyota iQ. In fact, we can see from the bird's-eye shot that the seating plan mimics that of Toyota's baby with two positions in a front bench and a single rear seat behind the front passenger.
