 Garrett 60-1 T4 Ported/Blueprinted Turbocharger

Look no further for if you need a killer low boost pressure T4 that can deliver a solid 550hp + punch.  This is the original compressor trim that easily eclipsed the 500 hp mark for the TO4E framed turbochargers.  Rock steady low boost performance that flows a lot of air without need to have high turbocharger shaft speeds.  Perfect for pump-gas builds that are built well beyond the 450 WHP level.  With its 4" inlet and undivided turbine housing inlet, this turbo is pure 20+ psi efficiency all the way.

We have here a P-trim turbine shaft that is the Garrett benchmark for high-horsepower exhaust flow as a basis for this turbo.  It drives the venerable 59 mm 60-1 compressor wheel with ease without much lag to worry about.  The CHRA has al of the well sought after Exclusive Turbosystems tweaks applied to squeeze every last ounce of performance and compressor efficiency out of the turbo.  The journal bearings are full circumference oil passage types and the turbine shaft journals are finely polished for ultimate surface hardness and low friction.  To top off the reduction in friction with this shaft and bearing combination of modifications, there is another benefit of lower bearing operating temperatures because of the improved oil flow inside the bearing structure.  This directly translates into longer bearing life and reduced carbon build-up from slow-moving oil throughout the CHRA.  On the turbine shaft of this turbo we have upgraded the standard piston ring seal to a staggered-gap design for the very best oil control available.  An added bonus is the incorporation of a 360 degree thrust bearing for the most durable performance possible.  These components also have modified oil delivery and polished journal surfaces for improved thrust capacity and low friction operation under load.  Spool-up of the 60-1 rotor group is improved by some 150 rpms minimum as a result of the reduction in friction inside the CHRA.  We call this a solid foundation to build upon.

The compressor housing is specifically cast to precisely match the flow characteristics of the 60-1 wheel and features a large 4" radiused inlet and 2.5" outlet.  This is a full-flow compressor housing with a bias towards high-cfm air movement.  Of course we had to bring it to the next level by porting the scroll passages and both the outlet and inlet.  Really we just made this good housing a great housing.  As you would expect from Exclusive Turbosystems, the exterior is metal finished to have a uniformly smooth finish which we then took to the buffing wheel to bring out a high-gloss shine.

Being the working side of this turbo, the turbine housing receives a full complement of carbide burr manipulation, otherwise known as porting.  We dig deep into the scroll inlet to remove the casting roughness and shape it into a uniform and smooth gas flow passage for maximum velocity and thermodynamic effect on the P-trim turbine wheel.  Even the turbine outlet is modified in such a manner to reduce turbulence and improve gas flow after it acts upon the turbine blades.  This .68 A/R housing is ideal for quick gas acceleration at the blade tips and heady volume to support the 550 HP plus that the 60-1 compressor wheel can easily deliver.  A 3" v-band outlet is cast into this housing for a compact and efficient connection to a downpipe.

As you can see this is a great all-around turbocharger that has been modified to be even better in both performance and durability.   The turbine housing portwork helps this turbo spool-up some 300 rpm sooner and when combined with the porting of the compressor housing and the blueprinting tweaks of the CHRA, response is better by almost 500 rpm!  Expect a very strong and linear boost response with this turbo, no on-off switch here.  The best part is that unlike other compressor trims, this turbo delivers best in the 15 to 25 psi range so street tunes setup for pump gas do very, very well indeed.  Wonderful turbo for street performance and a proven performer for killer pump-gas twin turbo builds.  The Exclusive Turbsystems 60-1, legendary performance made even better.

Audi's new A8 (2010): the first teaser photos

Tue, 21 Jul 2009

By Ben Pulman First Official Pictures 21 July 2009 17:34 Audi has released a teaser picture and sketch of its new A8 limo. Buried amongst the press material for Ingolstadt’s 100th anniversary were the two teaser images: the sketch reveals the headlight and grille design; the picture shows the A8 hidden beneath a black Audi-branded dustsheet. The A8 is currently in the final stages of testing, but Audi promises an unveil in ‘the late autumn of 2009’ – the new aluminium limo isn’t expected at the Frankfurt motor show this September, so we should see it in LA later in the year. Audi claims its ‘new flagship offers an impressive palette of innovative technologies and will redefine the benchmark for luxury saloons.’  A typically bullish claim – how will Audi match its boasts? The basic tech remains the same, with an aluminium chassis – which will also underpin the next Bentley Continental – that contributes to a significant weight saving.
