About Rotational Moulding

Rotational moulding, known also as rotomolding or rotocasting, is a process for manufacturing hollow plastic products. For certain types of liquid vinyls, the term slush molding is also used. Rotational molding has particular advantages in terms of relatively low levels of residual stresses and inexpensive molds. Rotational molding also has few competitors for the production of large hollow objects in one piece. Rotational molding is best known for the manufacture of tanks but it can also be used to make complex medical products, toys, leisure craft, and highly aesthetic point-of-sale products.

How Rotational Moulding Works

The process begins with specially developed and uniquely applied resins. They can include plastisols, polyethylene, polycarbonate, acetate butyrate, polyamide, elastomers, polyurethane, polypropylene, ethylene vinyl acetate and fluorocarbons. Some of the most advanced work is being done with cross-linked polyethylene and even nylon.

The principle of rotational molding of plastics is simple. Basically the process consists of introducing a known amount of plastic in powder, granular, or viscous liquid form into a hollow, shell-like mold.7œ9 The mold is rotated and/ or rocked about two principal axes at relatively low speeds as it is heated so that the plastic enclosed in the mold adheres to, and forms a monolithic layer against, the mold surface. The mold rotation continues during the cooling phase so that the plastic retains its desired shape as it solidifies. When the plastic is sufficiently rigid, the cooling and mold rotation is stopped to allow the removal of the plastic product from the mold. At this stage, the cyclic process may be repeated. The basic steps of mold charging,  mold heating,  mold cooling, and part ejection from the mold.

Cars, Culture and the City

Tue, 30 Mar 2010

When you think of American cities associated with the car it is Los Angeles of course that leaps first to mind, thanks mostly to Hollywood, and Detroit second. But New York turns out to have been vital in the history of car design, as I found researching an exhibition Cars, Culture and the City at the Museum of the City of New York as guest curator over the last few months, working with the museums curator architecture and design, Donald Albrecht. The show has just opened, on March 25.

BMW Individual program extends to 4-series Coupe and Convertible

Mon, 03 Feb 2014

Not that long ago BMW Individual was a little-known client program that offered unique materials and equipment to customer specification. While this may sound like a secret menu with an expanded list of interior options, in reality BMW Individual offered just about anything that buyers of Bentley or Rolls-Royce cars could specify. In the 1990s, for example, BMW Individual was the division responsible for completing the interior and exteriors of clients' L7 limousines, customizing such things as the options on the rear center console, fitting blue strobe packages and communications equipment, and creating interiors per customer specifications.

Fiat 500 UK Charity boost

Fri, 12 Jun 2009

One of the Fiat 500s donated by Fiat and decorated by Damian Hirst which were auctioned for the ARK Charity Over the course of a couple of days this week six Fiat 500s have been donated by Fiat for charity auctions and raised almost £500,000 in to the process. Which, cute and interesting as the Fiat 500 is, does sound rather a lot. After all, even the new Fiat 500C retails (in pop spec) at just over £11k.
